Terms and Privacy
Effective 2026-10-03.
Terms of use
Transients.fyi (“the site”, “we”) is a free, non-commercial explorer of astronomical transient data: the pages, the map, the feeds, the exports and the public API. By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
- The data. The site shows data from surveys, brokers and catalogs (listed under Sources and Credits), each under its own terms; cite and credit them as they ask. The data are automated and often preliminary: classifications, magnitudes and matches can be wrong. Check them at their source before relying on them.
- Acceptable use. Use the site and the API lawfully and within the published limits. Do not try to break, overload or get around the site's security or limits, scrape it in ways that degrade it for others, or use it to send spam, malware or abuse.
- Accounts. An account is optional and free. You are responsible for what is done with it and for keeping your sign-in email or provider account secure. Give a display name that does not impersonate anyone. You must be at least 13 to make one.
- Your comments. You keep ownership of what you post, and grant us a worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display and distribute it on the site and its feeds. Post only what you have the right to post. Comments must stay on topic and must not be unlawful, abusive, harassing, misleading or spam. We may hide or remove any comment, and suspend or close any account, at our discretion.
- Other sites. The site links to and loads images from other services. We do not control them and are not responsible for them; their own terms apply.
- No warranty. The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. It may change, be unavailable or stop at any time.
- Limitation of liability. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, observing time, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the site. Our total liability for any claim is limited to US $50.
- Indemnity. You agree to hold us harmless from claims arising from your content or your breach of these terms.
- Changes and law. We may update these terms; the date above says when, and continuing to use the site means you accept them. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the operator's state of residence, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
Privacy policy
Browsing, the map, the tables, the feeds and the API need no account, and we collect nothing personal for them. There are no ads, no analytics and no third-party trackers.
- What an account stores: a display name; how you sign in (the provider and its id for you: the address for an email link, the iD for ORCID, Google's and GitHub's numeric ids, not their addresses); your sessions (a hash of the cookie's token); your watchlist and its notes; your comments and the flags you raise. You sign in with an email link, Google, ORCID or GitHub, never a password.
- How it is used: only to run your account: to sign you in, keep your watchlist and show your comments. An email address is used only to send the sign-in links you ask for, and is never shown or shared. We do not sell or share personal information, or use it for advertising.
- Comments are public, with your display name and, if you signed in with ORCID, your iD.
- Service providers: Cloudflare delivers and protects the site and sends sign-in email; it and our hosting see your IP address to do so, which we use only for rate limits and do not store with your account. Signing in with Google, ORCID or GitHub is subject to that provider's privacy policy. The map loads sky images from CDS (Strasbourg) directly into your browser.
- Retention: a session lasts 30 days from its last use. Account data is kept until you delete the account; daily backups are kept seven days.
- Your choices: your account page downloads everything stored about you as JSON, and deletes the account. Your watchlist and sign-ins go at once; your comments stay, signed “deleted account”, so threads keep making sense. Ask us to remove a comment's text, or for anything else about your data, at the address below.
- Children: the site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
- Security: we take reasonable measures to protect what we store, but no service is perfectly secure.
Cookies
The site sets cookies only when you sign in, and only ones it needs to work, so it asks for no consent and shows no banner:
__Host-te_session: keeps you signed in, for 30 days from your last visit; signing out removes it.__Host-te_oauth: protects a Google, ORCID or GitHub sign-in from forgery, for 10 minutes.
Your browser's local storage also keeps the observing site you choose and your AAVSO observer code, when you set them, on your device only. If you use your location for the observing site, it is asked for only when you click, and rounded to 0.5° before it goes into a page's address.
